In The Media and Regular Newsletter, looking for a no BS and informed running read, I've got you covered.

I am a regular columnist writing regularly for Trail Run Magazine Coach's Corner, the Australian Trail and Ultra Runners Association and publish a regular newsletter.

Looking for a great read you can sign up here

Below is my back catalogue of newsletter articles:

  • The long run, why bother? We classify our runs into three buckets: easy, hard interval/threshold, and long run. We might mix these up sometimes, for example, including faster threshold running or race-pace efforts in your long run. Today, though, we will focus on the long run, which is probably the most important session for you as a runner.

  • 5 Myths Debunked  We've all heard them, be it from our high school games teacher or the person standing around, commenting on a race, but not participating. Those old-school pieces of advice or myths that refuse to die. So let's bust a few of them for good, with what all influencers and product marketers hate, science and research!

  • The dreaded taper  Taper week is always challenging, especially from a mental perspective. How can you make the best of your pre-race week?

  • Recovery is Recovery  Recovery is recovery, it sounds obvious but what do I mean? Look at your recovery from the aspect of time, being short, medium and long-term.

  • Slow Down to Speed Up  As a running coach, I'm fortunate enough to speak to people about running regularly. One of the most common questions is “How can I run faster?” After reviewing training logs and data, the most surprising answer to many is, telling people to slow down.

  • Don't wait for the New Year!  You can control a lot more than you think with longer-term planning. Giving yourself as much time as possible and good planning are the keys to having a great day for that race you have had your eye on for a while!

  • What's the perfect running form?  Having read "Born to Run" many years ago, I bought into the hype from the book about barefoot running and that heel striking is bad, which is a large part of the book's narrative (great backstory on the race, the science is debatable though as you'll see!!)

  • Do you really need all those electrolytes?  We can't scroll through social media nowadays without being told we need to take electrolytes, that prevent several ailments (predominantly cramping) and improve our training. But, how much of it is BS marketing pushing a product that only gives you expensive urine vs. good science?

  • Even the Olympians Screw Up  Over the past couple of weeks, we have been inundated with sports, and it's a great opportunity to observe and learn from the best in the world, at the Olympics. Interestingly they don't always get it right and I have 6 lessons learnt.

  • Planning Your Training  You want to run those races you have signed up for at your best (I know you say you just want to finish!!). Have you ever wondered how to plan your racing year to achieve this? I have you covered with a section on planning ahead.

  • Artificial Intelligence & Coaching  Artificial Intelligence (AI) has arrived with a bang, along with the excitement and discussions of a new technology, which can revolutionise entire industries. The Coaching of athletes for trail and ultra running is not immune from this! How well can AI be used for coaching and planning your training plan and racing?
